System Tips

Changes you may notice on the new system:

  • To logon to the catalog you need to enter the barcode from your library card and your password. Your password is your last name or if you have a last name that is longer then eight letters, just the first eight letters of your last name.

  • You may renew items from home. Logon to the catalog, click on the "My Library Card" at the top of the page, click on "Loans", click on the item you wish to renew, if there is a link on the page that opens that says "renew" then the item may be renewed by clicking on the link. If there is no link that says "renew" the item may not be renewed.

  • Starting July 14, 2005 items that we have ordered will appear in the online catalog so you can see what is coming. These items show only the word "Requested" in the "status/due date" column on the availability page.. If you would like to be on the "hold list" for one of these items ask a staff member to place a hold on the item for you. The system does not allow holds for items in this status to be done by the public.

  • You may place holds on items from home after you logon to the catalog. Do a search and when the results list is displayed click on "view" beside the item you are interested in placing a hold on to display the "Full View of Record" page. On that page click the "Location" link to display the "Holdings" page. If the item is checked out the due date will display and at the bottom left there will be a link called "Request." If you click on that link another page comes up, click on the "Submit" button and a request (hold) will be placed on the item for you.

  • You may save lists of books by using the My List function. Once saved to "My List" an item may be displayed from any computer connected to the Internet once you have logged on to the catalog. Use your imagination to determine what types of lists you want to keep. You could keep a list of books that you want to read in the future, a list of what you have read, or books for a project. To add an item to your list you must logon to the catalog and then do a search and display the item you want to add to the list. When you have the item displayed on your computer screen click the "Add to My List" link at the top of the screen. On the screen that comes up enter a name for the folder that you want to put the item into and click the "Submit" button. To view items on you list click on the "My List" link at the top of the screen.

  • To bring up a list of the first one thousand items in a collection such as the books on tape or the one week fiction you can use the "Command Search" tab. Under that tab, in the search box on the page type a command in the following format: "wlc=shelf list code" For example to get all the one week books that are fiction but not mysteries, westerns or science fiction you would type:" wlc=zwab2" (without the quotation marks). For books on tape substitute zwa21. To see a complete list of the codes click here

  • Try clicking on the picture of the cover of a book and you may find reviews of the book, a summary, the table of contents or information about the author.
